Low volume with your Android device?

Here’s a checklist to help you get to the problem quickly. I spent a while going through all sorts of minor settings changes before I got to the Bluetooth reset that worked for me.

But here is a broader checklist that could help you with a range of possible issues around playing music in your business using bluetooth speakers.

🔊 Android Audio Troubleshooting Checklist

Step 1: The Fast Fix (Network & Bluetooth Reset)

If the issue happens specifically on Bluetooth headphones, speakers, or car stereos, do this first.

  • Reset Wi-Fi and Bluetooth: Go to Settings > General management > Reset > Reset Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings (or Reset network settings). Tap Reset settings to confirm. Re-pair the device.

Step 2: Check Software Restrictions & Caps

Ensure the phone isn’t artificially limiting the hardware volume.

  • Media Volume Limit: Go to Settings > Sounds and vibration > Volume. Tap the three vertical dots in the top-right corner. Select Media volume limit and turn it OFF (or drag the slider all the way to the right).
  • Separate App Sound: Go to Settings > Sounds and vibration > Separate app sound. Ensure this is turned OFFso the phone doesn’t throttle power to background apps.

Step 3: Override the Audio Profile

Sometimes hidden audio enhancements unintentionally dampen sound frequencies.

  • Adapt Sound: Go to Settings > Sounds and vibration > Sound quality and effects > Adapt Sound. Turn it OFF. (Tip: If it is already off, changing the profile to “Over 60 years old” applies a massive system-wide frequency boost).
  • Hearing Enhancements: Go to Settings > Accessibility > Hearing enhancements. Ensure Mono audio is OFFand the Left/right sound balance slider is perfectly centered.

Step 4: The Developer Mode Override (For Stubborn Bluetooth Devices)

If headphones or AirPods are still too quiet, you must force the phone to stop managing the accessory’s volume slider.

  1. Go to Settings > About phone > Software information.
  2. Tap Build number rapidly 7 times to unlock Developer Options.
  3. Go back to the main Settings page and tap the new Developer options menu at the very bottom.
  4. Search for Disable absolute volume and turn the toggle ON.
  5. Disconnect and reconnect Bluetooth. Max out the phone volume, then use the physical buttons/touch controls on the headphones to turn up their internal volume.
