The Trump administration removed Shira Perlmutter from office of US Register Of Copyrights when she published a report that stated that, “using copyrighted works to train AI likely exceeds the limit of “fair use” under copyright law.
“The balanced report seems to take a stance that some tech titans won’t appreciate: training AI on copyrighted songs without licensing likely exceeds ‘fair use’ definitions in the United States”
Unfortunately money and power over-ride the rule of law so it’ll be a rocky path forward for copyright owners. With this in mind I think it’ll make things more confusing for business owners; do they need to respect copyright or not? Do they need a license to play music in public places or not?
The answer most certainly is yes for the time being and for the future, probably, but would any business want to take that risk standing up against ASCAP etc ? These powerful collection agencies will fight literally for their survival against anyone who tries to challenge them in court.
The middle ground as always is to sign to a more affordable music licensing and distribution service provider such as the leading one stop shop service provider Melody Pods. Less cost with no ambiguity and quality affordable music for your business.
